Which app should you pick?
You're already at the airport with no setup
Only option that works in 10 seconds without app install or language pack download. Open tapsay.me/app, you're done.
You need free-form text or camera translation
Camera mode and free-form translation are unmatched. Worth the setup time if you'll use it heavily for menus and signs.
You're having a long sit-down conversation
Multi-device conversation mode lets each person speak their language into their own phone. Best for business meetings, family meals.
You want a polished UI and don't mind paying
Best-in-class design and voice features. $5.99/mo gets you offline mode and a clean experience across iOS/Android/web.
You want a categorized phrasebook with native-speaker audio
Both organize phrases by travel scenario. Bravolol has higher-quality audio recordings; TapSay supports more languages (119 vs ~30) and has no ads.
The honest take from a founder who built one of these
I'm Rahul. I built TapSay after getting stranded in a Vietnamese pharmacy in 2024 with a stomachache and a dead data plan. So I'm biased, and you should know that before reading further.
Here's the truth: no single translator app wins every scenario. Google Translate is genuinely brilliant for camera-based menu reading. Microsoft Translator's conversation mode is magic when it works. iTranslate has the prettiest interface. Bravolol's native-speaker audio is better than any text-to-speech.
What TapSay does that none of them do is remove the setup friction. Every other app on this list assumes you planned ahead, downloaded packs over decent WiFi, signed up before you needed it. The moment of truth — when your data actually runs out, when you actually need to communicate with a stranger — is exactly the wrong moment to be downloading a 50MB language pack.
That's the niche TapSay was built for: the pharmacy at 9pm. The taxi negotiation. The street-food order. Things you do in 10 seconds, not 10 minutes. For everything else, install Google Translate too.
